Badminton Dad Beginning Soon!

Spring will soon be here and with it, this news:

Redmond, Wash. -- As part of the process to move to four-year high schools and to ensure Title IX compliance, Lake Washington School District reviewed sports offerings in its high schools this year. The result of this review is a decision to add girls’ badminton as a sport in the spring of 2013.
“As we near the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, it’s appropriate that we continue to respond to girls’ interests in playing sports,” noted Dr. Traci Pierce, deputy superintendent. “We have a history of strong badminton programs at the junior highs in our district, it is an Olympic sport and we believe it will be a popular offering at the high school level.”
Badminton was the top response to a survey question that asked, “Would you participate in the following sport(s) if the opportunity were available to you?” In the interest survey, 166 out of the 782 high school girls who responded indicated they would like to participate. That reflects the strong interest of the 280 girls who played badminton on junior high teams this year.
The district reviewed the feasibility of adding this sport, including the availability of facilities, coaches and competition. Lake Washington School District girls’ badminton teams will compete against each other and against teams from high schools in Bellevue and Mercer Island. More information about the schedules, season and coaches will be available when school begins in the fall.

Maddie will be playing and dad will now learn everything there is to know about the game!

Stay tuned.

Sadly, I sold my indoor sports lens, so we'll have to make due with what we have.
