Club Volleyball: Let's Go!
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Kate sandwiched the day by attending both Husky games on Wed and Fri. Disappointing loss yesterday but now it's time for the NCAA Tourney. Good luck, ladies! We are kind of in that dead zone between tryouts and first practice. We begin on Thursday and Kate is very excited to get things going. I am just kind of feeling a sense of relief that Kate made a team this first year, regrets that we didn't start this process 2 years ago, and pride that she is going into this an open book with a desire to be the best volleyball player she can be.

Dear Volleyball Dad,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on making it through the first round of club volleyball. I stumbled onto your blog when looking for something else and have really enjoyed it. If you have other student athletes who have played at the competitive club level, you have some idea what is involved, but volleyball is definitely different. If you've never been to an event at the Highline Community College, then you are in for an experience; 6 courts each with 4 teams, loud whistles and screaming girls for 8 hours.
One thing probably not touched on was the fact that if your daughter doesn't attend a 4 year high school, she didn't have the benefit of playing on a HS level team in preparation for club. Some 9th graders are coming into tryouts with some kind of warm-up to the club season whether it be on a HS frosh/soph team, JV or even varsity experience. Some Jr Highs/Middle Schools have a season concurrent with the HS, but many do not.
Our daughter was also at the Blaze tryout and you could definitely see the difference in the girls who had HS warm-up vs those who did not.
Someone mentioned Nevillizms camps and those are good camps, although short. During the summer there are other good camps at every major university around. Many High Schools attend these as a team. Best thing to do is get in touch with the HS coach at the school your daughter will attend and see if they will do this and also if they have summer workouts. Touching the ball consistently is important.
Keep up the posts because it is a fun read!
Thank you for your comment! I agree about the tryout timing. Kate's JH season actually begins in January so she will be playing this first year for Moxie AND for her Jr. High Varsity team. If she doesn't hate volleyball by March we will be home free. I wish that Lake Washington HS did a UW camp. I like the coach there, but they just don't get the talent at a 3 year, 300 person school. I believe only 1 girl from the current team is on a club. Makes me wish I lived in Kent. OK. Not really. :)
ReplyDeleteClub volleyball is the key to growth---High school, jr. high etc is more or less for fun. If you happen to be on a competitive team that heads to state or in a tough league--great, but most kids do it for fun and school spirit-not to grow as a player. And, enjoy the break from club!!
ReplyDeleteFinding the best club with the best training is the most important element if "Kate" wants to continue this path. She has done so this year.
Most 'club' girls are in volleyball YEARS before high season even starts.
Our DD barely made a team on NWJR's in 8th grade (no previous experience) and is now playing for an "elite" club---all from seeking out extra training off season-primarily at Nevillizms. (they offer 2-3x's a week most of the year w/ jump training inlcluded).
I also agree with a summer camp---NO need to do it thru your high school, they offer week long sessions most of July--they fill up VERY quickly and open up in Feb, I believe. :)

Great! We will definitely sign up for a summer camp or two!
