High School Volleyball Dad
Boy...the summer flew by! For the next couple of months it's club tryouts practice aka High School Volleyball! I enjoy watching Maddie compete at all levels and have to admit I'm looking forward to watching her as she begins her sophomore year. New coach, new gym and new energy at Kangaroo HS this year and tryouts start Monday! I DO find it amusing that Club teams choose their squads based on on a 2 hour tryout and HS takes 3 DAYS (10+ hours!). I will give it to Maddie; she worked hard this summer and is ready to compete, so to her and all of your DD's getting ready to go through the same thing, I say "go get 'em!"

One hs coach commented to me "I could choose the teams after 15 minutes. The other three or four days is for documenting why I chose the teams the way I did, so I can justify it after the inevitable disgruntled parent goes to my AD."
ReplyDeleteSadly, I fully believed him.
Our DD's school has open gyms (optional) as most do---and has ONE 6 hour tryout: 9-1 and 2-5-with the squads being picked and their first practice of the season from 6-9pm all in the same day. After going to State 3 out of his 4 years coaching...seems to me he and the AD don't spend too much time with the disgruntled parent(s).
ReplyDeleteOne thing about club tryouts is---they "scout" players based on who has registered. So, if you're new to a club--make sure you register as early as possible. Many clubs have a fairly good idea of their "team" prior to tryouts and on occassion have a 6'2 beastly hitter show up out of no where---which will shake things up a bit.
ReplyDeleteHigh school vb has a few more political conerns than club----which is ironic since most of the club parents pay 5k/year to play not ride the bench. :-)
GOOD LUCK to all of the hs players this season and have FUN!
