Change of Position?

Kate traveled up to Bellingham with 14 other girls who will be trying out for her HS team and spent 4 days up there living and breathing volleyball. Except for Kate and another girl, they were all juniors and seniors along with the coach. She had a GREAT time and came back ready to sign up for WWU on the spot! Several of the WWU players were part of the camp and Kate has already started chatting with them via email. I've been really impressed that those young ladies will take the time to offer advice etc.; kind of refreshing that they are so accessible. Kate's HS team has several returning setters and her coach asked her to begin working out as the right side hitter and backup setter...she even played a little middle. Kate is very excited about this new challenge and she seems to have a renewed sense of desire to make varsity as a sophomore. I'm happy too; she's a good athlete and being able to play multiple positions seems like it couldn't hurt moving forward. She has a very good relationship with the coach, who was also her Jr. High coach and accepted the position to coach the new HS team.

This week she will be attending the UW camp and getting in a few optional HS practices before the 'dead' time prior to tryouts....then a tune up with a local club coach and some of her Moxie teammates and then summer will be wrapping up Seemed alot longer when I was a kid! Would love to hear comments about DD's that switched positions; how did it work out?

  1. Sometimes the position you play on your HS team might be different than the position on a club team. Having Kate move to RS from setter probably isn't bad because if you run a 6-2, she will sometimes need to set. Biggest thing is a RS hitter has to block because that is the OH for the opposition.

We've had players change positions on the HS team in order to fill a need. This demonstrates dedication to the team and wanting to be a team player.

If Kate wants to try to make the varsity, then the best thing she can do is be versatile and show the coach she wants to do what is best for the team. The coach must feel she can make the transition and that is why she asked her to consider the move. It could be the coach wants to be able to use her and her talent, so is giving her the opportunity to step up.

Now if she thinks she can beat out one of the other upperclassman setters, then she should go for it!

  2. My DD doesn't really play a position yet on her club team. She was asked by her school coach what position she plays and she replied, "All of them." In fact, it's only recently that she has been thinking she might be better in one position than another. Next year, she will probably be positioned on her club team. The coaches philosophy is everyone needs to learn every position.

Being able to play all the positions just may get you a jersey when otherwise one might not be available.
